Welcome. You are no longer alone. You are now part of our community and we endeavour to provide the support and wisdom that comes with the lived experience of caring for someone with an eating disorder.

EDFA was started in 2017 by a group of parents and carers who are passionate about helping other carers through the challenging journey of supporting a loved one with an eating disorder. These same parents created a support group in Melbourne in 2016 to provide a space for hope, information sharing and optimism.

In the years since, we have grown these ‘strive‘ (support, teach, reassure, inform, validate and empower) carer support groups and they are now offered monthly online in every state and territory of Australia. This year we will launch a national group for carers of those with ARFID, a strive Bulimia group and a strive 4 Men. EDFA have also introduced Sibling support groups, new in 2021.

In addition to strive, we offer our members a closed Facebook group for community support, national twice monthly education sessions, access to international speakers, and clinical and carer training in innovative treatments such as TBT-S. We also have a new ‘Learning to live with, through and beyond an Eating Disorder‘ online course/workshop; an in-depth, unique, personal, small group education series run by our highly skilled facilitator, Jan Clarke, ED Consultant & Educator of The Bronte Centre.

We are founding members of the Eating Disorders Australia Alliance and actively collaborate with national and state services providers.

Please also join our strive Australia page and help us grow and reach as many families caring for someone with an eating disorder as possible. Here you will also find out member-only login access codes/Zoom links for our Education sessions and any other member-only information.

As an EDFA member, you are entitled to attend your monthly statewide strive support group, two free National education sessions on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 8pm AEDT, and benefit from member discounts on eating disorder events and conferences, as well as being connected to other carers around Australia for daily support and encouragement.

EDFA needs volunteers who would like to assist in the facilitation of strive online groups. Training and support will be provided. Ideally facilitators need to be in a strong place with their loved one’s recovery, so they can be a voice of hope for those in the depths of the journey. We also need volunteers to help with our many tasks and projects.

If you would like to give your support to other families by becoming a strive facilitator or an EDFA volunteer, please reach out by emailing me.

Kindest regards,

Christine Naismith
