Eating disorder carer charity calls for urgent support on World Eating Disorders Action Day today

On World Eating Disorders Action Day, the only national eating disorder carer organisation says funds are urgently needed to raise awareness of the impact eating disorders have on families.

Eating Disorders Families Australia (EDFA) says this year’s World Eating Disorders Action Day theme “Break the Bias, Support Families” highlights the incredible hardship families experience when caring for someone with and eating disorder, due to the stigma that still surrounds these life-threatening diseases.

EDFA is aiming to raise $50,000 by midnight tonight as part of World Eating Disorders Action Day (WEDAD).

In a move to help more families cope, EDFA has just launched its annual awareness and fundraising Recharge 4 Recovery appeal and is calling on governments and the community to support its essential services that give hope to eating disorder carers.

EDFA Executive Director Jane Rowan welcomed the theme of this year’s World Eating Disorders Action Day as hugely important recognition in the global fight to break the stigma of eating disorders for the people impacted by the disease.

“We know that millions of Australian families are impacted by an eating disorder. Our lived experience team does all it can to support these carers but without more funding the needs of many families remains unmet,” Ms Rowan says.

“On this World Eating Disorder Action Day, we’re calling on governments to enable us to help more eating disorder carers and to raise awareness of how devastating the impacts of eating disorders on families can be.”

EDFA’s Recharge 4 Recovery fundraising appeal focuses on the importance of self-care for those who are supporting a loved one through eating disorder recovery.

The month-long campaign, which aims to raise more than $100,000 to support EDFA’s services, is calling on all eating disorder carers to paint their finger and toenails purple throughout June to start conversations about their experience of supporting someone with an eating disorder.

EDFA has released carer video stories to highlight the importance of the work EDFA does to support eating disorder carers who are often in crisis. Watch EDFA’s Recharge 4 Recovery carer stories here.

EDFA is the only national organisation focussed solely on providing support, education, advocacy and counselling services to carers and families of those living with an eating disorder. Established in 2016, EDFA currently has more than 3,000 members and has helped hundreds of carers and families over the years.
